Love Letter & Wine Box Ceremony

A Love Letter & Wine Box Ceremony is a romantic addition to any wedding that will serve as a lasting reminder of the commitments made to one another.

The box would contain a bottle of wine, two glasses, and a love letter each from the bride and groom to one another. The letters describe the good qualities the couple find in each other, the reasons they fell in love, and their reasons for choosing to marry. The letters are sealed in individual envelopes and the couple are not privy to what the other has written. Family members and friends may also be invited to compose notes as well, containing their thoughts and their most important piece of advice to the couple as they journey through life together, and add them to the box as part of the ceremony, The box is sealed during the ceremony, sometimes with two keys so that the couple need to be together to open the box, or sometimes with one key that may be given to a trusted friend for safe-keeping. The sealed box would then be displayed in a place of honor in the home as a constant reminder of the couples’ commitment to each other.

The original concept behind this tradition was that the box should never be opened unless the couple was experiencing insurmountable hardships, in which case they were to open the box, sit and drink the wine together, and then read the letters they had written to one another when they were united as a couple in marriage. By reading the love letters, it was hoped that they would reflect upon the reasons they fell in love and chose to marry, and thus come to reconcile their differences. The bigger hope was, however, that they would never have a reason to open the box.

More recently, it has been considered acceptable to open the box every anniversary (or every 5, every 10, etc.), share the wine, replace it with a fresh bottle and leave the letters untouched, or even add new ones, creating your very own “romantic” time capsule to be opened and shared on a future milestone anniversary celebration.
